KPV is a synthetic tripeptide consisting of the amino acid sequence Lysine-Proline-Valine (Lys-Pro-Val), with molecular formula C₁₆H₃₀N₄O₄, a molecular weight of approximately 342.43 Da, and CAS number 67727-97-3. KPV represents the C-terminal bioactive fragment (residues 11-13) of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH), retaining the receptor binding signaling properties of the parent molecule while lacking melanocortin receptor binding and melanogenic activity.

In laboratory research, KPV is extensively studied for its inhibition of the NF-κB signaling pathway, including IκBα stabilization and prevention of NF-κB nuclear translocation.
